AIDS Foundation Chicago (AFC) is a leading advocate for health equity, housing justice, and ending the HIV epidemic. At a pivotal time of growth and transformation, we seek a strategic, mission-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to steward AFC’s financial future. The CFO will play a critical leadership role in ensuring the organization’s long-term sustainability, expanding funding streams, and advancing our bold vision for health and housing justice across Illinois.
The CFO (Chief Financial Officer) is responsible for managing the financial operations of the organization and ensuring the organization’s financial health and sustainability. This role will oversee all financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, grant management and compliance requirements. The CFO is a member of AFC’s Senior Leadership Team and will work closely with the CEO and Board of Directors to develop and implement short- and long-term financial strategies and plans that support the organization’s mission and goals. The CFO manages AFC’s $40.9 million budget and oversees coordination and collaboration with AFC’s subsidiary organization, Center for Housing & Health (CHH), which has a $40.3 million budget. The CFO is responsible for leading a collaborative and forward-thinking team that leverages technology and forward-thinking policies and procedures to continually improve AFC’s financial operations.
The salary range for this role is $168,000 to $200,000 annually per year, based on experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities AFC is navigating an evolving funding landscape impacting the nonprofit sector. In response, the organization has proactively implemented strategic measures to strengthen financial sustainability and build a foundation for long-term success. The CFO will play a critical leadership role in stabilizing operations, driving financial innovation, and positioning AFC for continued growth and impact. Key Responsibilities Include - Develop and implement financial strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and Office of Management and Budget and other funder requirements
- Oversee financial reporting, forecasting, budgeting and cash flow for operations, existing programs, proposed programs and earned revenue opportunities
- Ensure the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial systems
- Develop and oversee the annual budgeting process, working closely with program and departmental leads to develop realistic and achievable budgets and educate AFC managers about AFC’s finances and engage them in the budgeting process
- Ensures efficient coordination and collaboration between AFC and CHH, including ensuring both organizations use parallel budgeting, accounting and finance policies and processes
- Develop and implement a system for regularly reporting to program leads on program spending, including a feedback system to ensure data is accurate
- Champion innovation by identifying and implementing modern financial systems, technologies, and automation tools that drive efficiency, strengthen financial reporting, and support data-informed decision-making across AFC and CHH
- Ensure financial and accounting policies and procedures are up-to-date and documented
- Analyze financial data and keep senior leadership abreast of AFC’s financial status
- Monitor banking and investment activities of the organization and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash positions and achieve long-term growth of assets
- Develop and maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets of the organization and to oversee city, state and federal awards and programs and assure compliance with all funder financial requirements
- Communicate and advocate with AFC’s public funders as needed
- Manage relationships with external auditors and other financial service providers to ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with staff and partner agencies to develop and implement internal and external program monitoring, evaluation, and quality assurance activities
- Assess the financial efficacy of programs and establish financial and administrative systems to support program operations
- Attend Board meetings, including being the lead staff on the Finance Committee
- Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, and Board of Directors, actively contributing to organizational strategy and financial sustainability. Lead financial communications and reporting to key stakeholders, including public funders, program partners, and the Board.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities - Direct supervision of the Controller and Senior Director of Grants and Contracts. Dotted-line collaboration with the Vice President of Finance at CHH. Responsible for fostering a collaborative, high-performing finance team culture across both AFC and CHH.
Experience And Education Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business, or a CPA certification in lieu of a master's degree
- 10 years of directly relevant experience at a Director or Chief Financial Officer level
- Government grants and contracts experience
- Hands-on experience with accounting and financial management software and integrating technology into finance
- Familiarity with the way nonprofit organizations are structured and operate
Preferred Qualifications - Previous experience managing Ryan White and HUD grants
- Prior experience as a Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
- Proficiency with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT
- Experience negotiating a federal indirect cost rate
- Knowledge of Single Audits (Uniform Guidance / OMB Super Circular compliance)
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work environment is representative of that found in a general office environment. Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 10 pounds.) Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation and on the telephone.
